Mission

Fire Condition is devoted to providing a valuable resource for firefighters seeking to maintain or improve their health, physical fitness, and readiness for duty.

Shawn Perry

Fire Condition began development in 2000 by Fire Captain and Exercise Physiologist, Shawn Perry. Shawn's health and fitness experiences include competing and coaching track and field at the NCAA division 1 level. Shawn earned a B.S. in Human Performance from San Jose State University (1983) and a M.S. in Exercise Physiology from the University of Illinois (1987). He has authored numerous articles for Fire Engineering magazine and other publications regarding firefighter health and fitness.

Shawn began his fire service career in 1992 with the Sacramento Fire Department promoting to the ranks of engineer and captain. He spent four years as an instructor the Sacramento Regional Fire Academy which included the assignment of "Drill Master", in charge of day to day operations.

Al "Coach" Baeta

The "Coach", pictured on the home page, is Al Baeta. Coach Baeta is a local track and field coach legend in Northern California and was bestowed the honor of serving on four U.S. Olympic staffs including the position of head team manager for the 1996 Olympic track and field team in Atlanta. He joined the Sacramento Fire Department in 1990 as the Fitness Director and was the architect of both the recruit academy fitness program and the health and fitness program for line personnel.

The day started then, as it does now, at 0700 hrs with recruits lined up in formation and ready for the activities of the day. Until he retired at 68 years old; he ran with us, put on the gear, did the push-ups and played the roles of educator, motivator, and role model. He retired from his official role with department in 2000 and continues to lecture and consult for the fire service and other public safety agencies.

Coach Baeta built the program from the ground up and had a significant impact and influence not only on recruits but also line personnel. During his 11 year tenure, cardiac-related claims for the Sacramento Fire Department declined sharply, while claims in the police department (no program) rose sharply. Coach Baeta put teeth into the concept that health and fitness is good for the employee, the employer, and the public. His program model is in use today and has striking similarities to the IAFF Wellness/Fitness Initiative. He was a man ahead of his time.

Anatomical Firefighter

The Anatomical Firefighter was inspired by Leonardo Divinci's Anatomical Man and created by graphic artist and friend Val Laolagi. The Anatomical Firefighter is about the person behind the turnouts and tools of the trade. The image represents a personal commitment of our readiness to perform our duties. The Anatomical Firefighter represents the Fire Condition you bring to the table when answering the next call.
